Biography of Sebastian Fichtl

Sebastian has been delighting international audiences for over 30 years with his talent and versatility on a very unique instrument, the ALPINE CONCERT ZITHER. The zither is a folk-music instrument, though a wide variety of musical styles are creatively performed by the artist.

The alpine zither in its present shape, is native to Austria and Bavaria, and its origin can be traced to the early 1800's. It can be considered to be three instruments in one: guitar, harp and bass. It has from 32 to 45 strings, of which five are melody strings that lie over a fretboard, played with the fingers of the left hand and plucked with the thumb of the right hand. The other strings are open, each tuned to a single note and plucked with the fingers of the right hand to form harmonies and rhythm.

The zither gained worldwide recognition through the classic movie "The Third Man", to which the Viennese zither player Anton Karas composed and performed the entire background score of haunting melodies.

Sebastian was born and raised in Salzburg, Austria, the city of Mozart and the setting for "The Sound of Music". He took his first music lessons just a few doors away from Mozart's birthplace in the famous Getreidegasse in Salzburg.

Later on in life, he studied under one of Austria's foremost zither virtuosos, Prof. FRANZ BRANDLHOFER. Sebastian’s expert musicianship and love for the zither brings out the instrument’s full potential. The comment frequently heard at performances is how the music is "mellow and relaxing, yet bright and lively".

Sebastian's travels, with his zither never far from his side, have taken him virtually around the world. Enthusiastically received by people of all cultures and backgrounds, he was honored by the government of Austria with a gold medal for being an ambassador of goodwill, communicating with the international language of beautiful music.
